La longévité médicale du docteur Edme Joachim Bourdois de la Mothe
Isabelle COQUILLARD, Doctorante en Histoire Moderne, Université Paris X- Nanterre
RésuméAbstract

Edme Joachim Bourdois de la Mothe was born in 1754 and rose to the rank of Docteur régent of the Faculté de médecine de Paris in 1778. He ended his medical career in the 1830s, having been awarded many honours and having become quite well off. Bourdois de la Mothe not only managed to surf the socio-political changes of the times but also to understand the impact that those changes would have on his potential clientele and on his profession. It was not longer possible for a doctor to pursue a linear career as a general practitioner. He began as a military doctor during the Revolution, gradually rising to become doctor to the notables of the court during the Empire period. He was particularly interested in the ontology of the role of the doctor, and his definition of medical practice put the well being of the patient before any idea of personal gain. This desire to be of public use went hand in hand with an interest in medical research and activism in the organisations designed to survey public health.
