Le mystère des masques mortuaires de Napoléon
Chantal LHEUREUX-PREVOT, Bibliothécaire, Fondation Napoléon (France, Paris)
RésuméAbstract

The «affair of the death masks of Napoleon I» is a popular (pseudo-)mystery attached to the myth of Napoleon that has surfaced regularly since the emperor’s death in1821. In this historical imbroglio, masks (very different both in materials and in the face they purport to represent) have suddenly burst onto the Napoleonic stage, only to disappear again equally as rapidly into private hands. Historical exactitude can only be found in a few very partial (and sometimes partisan) sources. Any attempt to reconstruct the journeys of these potentially authentic masks to the present day finds itself forced to fall back on supposition and personal beliefs.
