RésuméAbstract

Did Napoleon preserve or betray the principles of the French Revolution? This old question remains at the heart of Napoleonic studies. This paper examines this proposition in relation to the formation in 1808 of an imperial nobility. Whilst the imperial government generated few documents exposing its views - and the decree of March 1, 1808 establishing the imperial nobility is extremely laconic - the Archives Nationales do however hold several proposals for the reestablishment of an hereditary imperial elite written between 1804 and 1807. While none of these was implemented, they influenced the shape the imperial nobility ultimately assumed. Even those proposals which had little impact are still significant for they suggest the range of ideas and assumptions available to Napoleon and his collaborators as they embarked upon the creation of a new nobility.
