RésuméAbstract

The Revolution was undertaken against the aristocracy, and it banished that class from La Nation. Even before 1789, privilege was felt to be (in accordance with Sieyès theories) a sort of corruption of the idea of the law governing the life of the community, it marked the aristocracy out and condemned them, and this corruption was expressed in the contradistinction - ceaselessly trotted out in order to defend both general and private interests - of the useful and the useless, of the norm and the degeneration of that norm. The Republican (hence patriot) could therefore legitimately fight against the aristocrat (now émigré and so treacherous plotter), using whatever arms felt appropriate. This theme appeared with the Revolution and remained a permanent feature in French political history until very recently.
