Il existe aux archives départementales des Yvelines un fonds concernant la guerre et l’occupation de 1870-1871 dans le département de Seine-et-Oise (qui comptait 700 communes) qui remonte au début de la IIIe République. Ces cartons constituent une source non négligeable pour l’histoire sociale et culturelle de la guerre à la fin du XIXe siècle. L’auteur présente ici les résultats de l’exploitation de ce fonds et de la bibliographie qu’il a suscité, les deux aspects s’inscrivant dans un courant d’édition qui ne cessa de croître à l’échelle nationale jusqu’en 1914. Il s’intéresse à l’origine et au sens de cette inflation documentaire, au rôle joué dans ce processus par l’augmentation du nombre des auteurs et du lectorat liée au développement de l’alphabétisation et de l’édition. Surtout, il étudie la place qu’occupent les événements proprement dits et l’interprétation qu’on a voulu en donner.

The Yvelines departmental archives have a collection dating from the beginning of the Third Republic which is related to the war and occupation of 1870-1871 in the Seine-et-Oise département (which comprised 700 communes). The collection provides an important source for the social and cultural history of that war at the end of the 19th century. The author here presents the work done using this collection and the books published on the subject, both seen in the context of the steady increase in the publication of similar material in France nationwide up to 1914. The questions considered here are the origin and reasons for this documentary inflation and the role played in this process by the increase in the number of authors and readers in the context of the development of reading and writing and the publishing industry. However, the primary concern here is the contemporary importance of the events themselves and the interpretation given to them.
