Les notables du Rhône, une nouvelle élite ?
Jean-Philippe REY
RésuméAbstract

This article takes its starting point from the three principle censuses of notables performed during the Empire period (An XIII, 1806 and 1810) and offers a study of this population of 104 “grands notables” in the Rhône region. The aim is to try to understand Napoleon’s ambition in this context of designation and fusion of elites. We know that Napoleon wanted to create a new ‘upper’ class composed of new men who had emerged from the turmoil of the Revolution and men more linked to the Ancien régime. The situation in Lyons and in the Rhône valley was atypical given the relatively limited presence of old aristocracy there, the importance of the world of trade, and finally the significant sense of trauma following the insurrection of 1793. It would appear that in this specific situation, the imperial project was well on the way to becoming a reality.
